When getting quotations for home renovation projects, it’s easy to overlook some crucial details. Our Operations Manager gives his top three things you should always ensure are included in your quote.

1. Waste Removal

Proper waste disposal is essential and often forgotten. In the UK, the cost of removing waste correctly ranges from £300 to £500. This cost can easily be overlooked, but it’s crucial to include it in your quotation.

Improper disposal can lead to strict penalties, including fines and even prosecution. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 outlines that individuals or companies failing to dispose of waste correctly can face fines up to £5,000 and, in severe cases, imprisonment of up to five years (GOV.UK) (Sentencing Council). Ensuring waste removal is covered in your quote can save you from hefty fines and legal trouble.

If your tradesperson says it’s your responsibility to arrange waste removal, then make sure you use a reputable company, like Litta, and always get a Waste Transfer Notice when they collect it from you.

2. Detailed Scope of Work

A detailed scope of work is crucial to ensure you and your contractor are on the same page. This should include a breakdown of all tasks, materials, and timelines. Without this, you might find yourself facing additional charges for tasks you assumed were included. For example, if your quote doesn’t specify that painting is included, you might end up paying extra for it later.

3. Permits or Permissions

Certain renovation projects require permits and permissions from local authorities. The two that are most likely to come up when renovating a bathroom are permission from a Building Management company if you live in a flat.  They will often have a set of criteria that you’ll need to ensure are followed to be in compliance - such as not installing bidet hoses.

If you’re moving the location of a bathroom or adding a new bathroom to your property, then you’ll need to engage the Building Control team at your Local Authority, or a building control specialist to do this on your behalf.
